Ingredients

For the Sushi Rice
  • 2 cups sushi rice high-quality
  • 2.5 cups water
  • 0.25 cups Akazu red vinegar
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
For the Sushi
  • Nori sheets
  • Fresh fish or vegetables for filling
  • Soy sauce
  • Wasabi

Equipment

  • Medium Saucepan
  • Bamboo Sushi Mat
  • Wooden Spatula
  • Sharp Knife

Method

  1. Step 1: Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. Step 2: In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed rice and water. Bring it to a boil over medium heat.
  3. Step 3: Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for 18-20 minutes. Remove from heat and let it sit covered for another 10 minutes.
  4. Step 4: Mix the Akazu red vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl until dissolved.
  5. Step 5: Transfer the cooked rice to a large bowl. Gently fold in the vinegar mixture with a wooden spatula.
  6. Step 6: Grab a sheet of nori and place it on a bamboo sushi mat. Wet your hands and spread a thin layer of sushi rice evenly over the nori.
  7. Step 7: Add your desired fillings in a line across the center of the rice.
  8. Step 8: Carefully roll the sushi away from you, using the mat to help shape it tightly. Seal the edge with water.
  9. Step 9: Slice the roll into bite-sized pieces with a sharp knife.
  10. Step 10: Serve your sushi with soy sauce and wasabi, if desired. Enjoy!

Notes

To store leftover sushi, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and keep it in the fridge. It's best enjoyed within a day or two for optimal freshness.
