- Step 1: Start by rinsing the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and helps achieve that perfect creamy texture.
- Step 2: In a pot, combine the rinsed rice and your choice of water or broth.
- Step 3: Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, keeping a close eye on it.
- Step 4: Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Let it simmer for about 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally. You want the rice to become soft and the porridge to reach your desired consistency.
- Step 5: Once it’s ready, add salt to taste. Remember, you can always adjust it later!
- Step 6: Serve your Okayu hot, topped with your favorite optional toppings for that extra flair!

If you’ve made a big batch, you can store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just add a splash of water or broth when reheating to bring back that creamy consistency!
