Ingredients

For the Sushi Rice
  • 2 cups sushi rice providing that perfect sticky texture
  • 2.5 cups water essential for cooking the rice to fluffy perfection
  • 1/3 cup rice vinegar adds that tangy flavor
  • 3 tbsp sugar balances the acidity of the vinegar
  • 1 tsp salt enhances the overall flavor of the rice
For the Filling
  • Nori sheets
  • Fresh fish (such as tuna or salmon), sliced
  • Vegetables (such as cucumber or avocado), sliced
  • Soy sauce, for serving
  • Wasabi and pickled ginger, for serving

Equipment

  • Medium Pot
  • Bamboo Sushi Mat
  • Sharp Knife

Method

  1. Step 1: Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain it well.
  2. Step 2: In a medium pot, combine the rinsed rice and water. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for 20 minutes, or until the water is fully absorbed.
  3. Step 3: After cooking, remove the pot from heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 10 minutes.
  4. Step 4: While the rice is resting, prepare the vinegar mixture by combining rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small saucepan over low heat until the sugar dissolves.
  5. Step 5: Transfer the rice to a large bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture using a wooden spatula. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.
  6. Step 6: Place a sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi mat. Wet your hands to prevent sticking, and spread a thin layer of sushi rice evenly over the nori.
  7. Step 7: Lay slices of fish and vegetables horizontally across the rice.
  8. Step 8: Using the sushi mat, carefully roll the nori away from you, applying gentle pressure to form a tight roll.
  9. Step 9: Slice the roll into bite-sized pieces with a sharp knife.
  10. Step 10: Serve your sushi with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger.

Notes

If you have leftover sushi, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. The rice will lose some of its texture, but it's still delicious!
