Ingredients

Rice and Vegetables
  • 1 cup Japanese short-grain rice for sticky texture
  • 2 cups water for cooking rice
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil for sautéing
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 1 medium carrot diced
  • 1/2 cup green peas for texture and color
  • 300 g ground beef or pork for protein and richness
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce for umami flavor
  • 1 tbsp ketchup for sweetness
Optional Toppings
  • 4 eggs fried or poached eggs for serving
  • chopped parsley for garnish

Equipment

  • Large Skillet
  • Pot

Method

  1. Step 1: Start by rinsing the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and set it aside.
  2. Step 2: In a pot, combine the rice and water. Bring it to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let it sit covered for 10 minutes.
  3. Step 3: Meanwhile, heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and carrot, sautéing until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Step 4: Add the ground meat to the skillet and cook until browned. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, green peas, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 5 minutes until heated through.
  5. Step 5: To serve, spoon the savory meat mixture over the fluffy rice. Top with a fried or poached egg and sprinkle with chopped parsley.
